How BabyFeet Walked Into My Life

The BabyFeet jewelry collection was created as a celebration of life. My husband knew how proud I was of our first son, Colton, and how I wanted everyone to know. Not being able to find any pieces of style and quality, we decided to cast his feet on a slide with his birthstone. Combined with my anniversary, birthday, and other special slides, I was thrilled that my bracelet was then complete with the story of my life.

Sadly, our story changed. Those tiny feet that I am so proud of never wore shoes, were never even walked on. At eight weeks old, Colton died of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.) With our lives torn apart, I felt comforted wearing his feet, keeping that memory with me at every moment.

We have since been blessed with Colton's little brother and sister. In celebration of their lives, we had slides made with their birthstones too. When not only my friends, but also complete strangers, began asking for slides of their children, I decided to start BabyFeet.

In Colton's honor, a portion of each BabyFeet purchase will go to the American SIDS Institute for medical research for the prevention of SIDS. For more information about SIDS follow this link.

Savvy Moms Fighting SIDS

Savvy Moms Fighting SIDS is a group of girlfriends working to promote SIDS awareness and hosting fundraising events for SIDS Research. In 2002, we held a Silent Auction in Columbia, Maryland, and in July 2003, we held a swim-a-thon in Crofton, Maryland. All proceeds were donated to the American SIDS Institute in Honor of Colton Marr. Our next big fundraiser will be our second annual Swim-a-Thon for SIDS.

Also in July 2003, we traveled to New York City to promote SIDS awareness. We even talked to Matt and Katie outside the Today Show and got a personal phone call from Ann Curry, the Today Show Anchor a few days later!

The girlfriends in Savvy Moms Fighting SIDS were actually friends before the group started. We are a Consultant, a Marketing Professional, a Public Relations Specialist and an Interior Decorator but most importantly, Moms. It was through the loss of Kristen's son Colton, that we decided to change the focus of our "Mom's Weekends" and other outings to ending SIDS, a more important cause than just shopping and entertainment. And we still have fun; we shopped around NYC carrying a five foot SIDS Awareness sign, stopping to talk about it to anyone who asked - and a lot of people asked! We also wore our "Savvy Moms Fighting SIDS" t-shirts to attract further attention to our cause. No, we didn't stand on street corners handing out pamphlets so they could be thrown in the trash; we talked to everyone who stopped us personally and openly asked about SIDS. It was not surprising to hear how many people have been affected by SIDS, usually by someone they know.
